We are fundamentally changing how ore is extracted and processed. Our coarse particle recovery technology allows us to process ore at a much coarser grind, dramatically reducing energy and water consumption. At our El Soldado copper operation in Chile, this technology has demonstrated the potential to reduce water usage by up to 85% and energy consumption by up to 50% compared to conventional processing methods.
- Bulk ore sorting: Using sensor-based technology to separate waste rock from ore before processing, reducing the volume of material that enters the concentrator and cutting energy use significantly.
- In-mine coarse particle recovery: Processing ore underground before it reaches the surface, minimising surface disturbance and reducing the need for large-scale tailings facilities.
- Hydrogen-powered mine haul trucks: Our partnership with First Mode has produced the world's largest hydrogen-powered mine haul truck, eliminating diesel emissions from one of mining's most carbon-intensive activities.
2. Concentrating the Mine
Rather than moving vast quantities of rock to processing plants, we are developing technologies that concentrate value at the point of extraction. This approach reduces the physical and environmental footprint of mining by processing less material more intelligently. Advanced sensing technologies, including hyperspectral imaging and X-ray transmission sensors, allow us to identify and separate valuable ore from waste with unprecedented precision.
3. The Waterless Mine
Water scarcity is one of the most pressing challenges facing the mining industry, particularly in arid regions where many of the world's most significant mineral deposits are located. Anglo American's ambition is to develop mining processes that require no freshwater at all. Through a combination of dry processing technologies, advanced water recycling systems, and desalination partnerships, we are making meaningful progress towards this goal.
