The Imperative of Ethical Supply Chains

In an era of heightened stakeholder scrutiny, regulatory complexity, and growing consumer awareness, the integrity of mining supply chains has never been more important. Customers, investors, and regulators increasingly demand full transparency into the origins of the metals and minerals they purchase, seeking assurance that these materials have been produced without harm to people, communities, or the environment. Anglo American has made ethical supply chain management a cornerstone of our business strategy, recognising that trust is earned through transparency, accountability, and consistent performance.

The challenge of ensuring ethical supply chains extends far beyond our own operations. The journey from mine to market involves multiple intermediaries β€” traders, smelters, refiners, manufacturers, and logistics providers β€” each of which must uphold the same standards of responsible conduct. Anglo American's approach to supply chain integrity addresses every link in this chain, from the ore we extract to the finished products our customers receive.

Anglo American's Responsible Sourcing Framework

Our responsible sourcing commitments are governed by a comprehensive framework that integrates international best practices, industry standards, and our own rigorous policies:

The Anglo American Responsible Sourcing Standard

Our Responsible Sourcing Standard sets the expectations we apply to ourselves and our supply chain partners. It covers critical areas including:

  • Human rights: Zero tolerance for forced labour, child labour, and modern slavery across our operations and supply chains, with independent audit and verification mechanisms.
  • Environmental stewardship: Requirements for environmental management, emissions reduction, and biodiversity protection that apply to all suppliers and contractors.
  • Anti-corruption and governance: Strict anti-bribery and corruption policies, with mandatory due diligence on all business partners and counterparties.
  • Community engagement: Expectations for meaningful community consultation and benefit-sharing at every stage of the supply chain.
  • Health and safety: Requirements for workplace safety standards that meet or exceed local regulatory requirements and align with international best practices.

Industry Certifications and Standards

Anglo American participates in and supports a range of industry certification programmes that provide independent verification of responsible production:

  • The Copper Mark: Our copper operations have been assessed against the Copper Mark's responsible production criteria, covering 32 ESG issues. This certification provides our customers with third-party assurance that our copper is produced responsibly.
  • Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC): De Beers Group, Anglo American's diamond business, is a founding member of the RJC and maintains certification across its entire value chain, from mine to retail.
  • Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA): We are committed to independent, third-party assessment of our operations under the IRMA Standard for Responsible Mining, the most comprehensive independent mine-site assessment tool available.
  • London Bullion Market Association (LBMA): Our platinum group metals operations are certified under the LBMA's Responsible Gold and Platinum Guidance, ensuring compliance with the highest standards of responsible sourcing for precious metals.

Traceability and Digital Provenance

Technology plays a crucial role in ensuring supply chain transparency. Anglo American is investing in digital traceability solutions that provide customers with verifiable provenance information for the materials they purchase:

  • Tracrβ„’ (diamonds): De Beers' blockchain-based platform, Tracrβ„’, tracks diamonds from mine to retail, providing an immutable record of each stone's journey and ensuring that every diamond can be traced to a known, responsible source.
  • Digital product passports: We are developing digital product passports for our metals and minerals that provide customers with comprehensive data on the origin, processing, and sustainability credentials of every shipment.
  • Supply chain mapping: Advanced data analytics and supplier management platforms enable us to map our supply chains in granular detail, identifying potential risks and ensuring compliance at every tier.

Human Rights Due Diligence

Anglo American's commitment to human rights extends throughout our value chain. Our Human Rights Policy, aligned with the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, establishes a clear framework for identifying, preventing, and mitigating human rights risks:

  • Risk assessment: We conduct regular human rights impact assessments across our operations and supply chains, with a particular focus on high-risk jurisdictions and commodity sectors.
  • Grievance mechanisms: Robust, accessible grievance mechanisms are in place at every operation, enabling community members, employees, and supply chain workers to raise concerns without fear of retaliation.
  • Remediation: Where adverse human rights impacts are identified, we are committed to providing appropriate remediation and implementing corrective actions to prevent recurrence.

Collaboration for Systemic Change

No single company can transform global mining supply chains alone. Anglo American actively collaborates with governments, industry peers, civil society organisations, and international institutions to drive systemic improvements in supply chain governance. We are a founding member of the Mining Association's Towards Sustainable Mining initiative and contribute to OECD guidance on responsible mineral supply chains.

Our partnership approach reflects the understanding that ethical supply chains are a collective responsibility. By working together with our peers and stakeholders, we can establish norms and practices that raise the bar for the entire industry, ensuring that the metals and minerals powering the global economy are produced with integrity, transparency, and respect for human dignity.

Building Trust Through Transparency

Ultimately, ethical supply chains are about building trust. Trust with customers who need assurance that their products are responsibly sourced. Trust with investors who seek confidence that ESG risks are managed effectively. Trust with communities who deserve to know that the mining operations in their midst operate with integrity. Anglo American is committed to earning and maintaining that trust through transparent disclosure, independent verification, and an unwavering commitment to responsible sourcing from mine to market.
