The Digital Mine Is Here

The image of mining as a labour-intensive, analogue industry is rapidly becoming obsolete. Today's most advanced mining operations bear more resemblance to technology companies than to the mines of the past, with artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, and real-time data analytics transforming every aspect of the mining value chain. Anglo American is at the forefront of this digital revolution, deploying cutting-edge technologies that are making our operations safer, more efficient, and more sustainable than ever before.

Digital transformation in mining is not about technology for its own sake. It is about solving real operational challenges β€” reducing safety risks, optimising resource recovery, minimising environmental impact, and delivering value to our stakeholders. Every digital initiative at Anglo American is evaluated against these criteria, ensuring that technology investment translates into tangible operational and sustainability outcomes.

Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning

AI and machine learning are being applied across Anglo American's operations to unlock insights from the vast volumes of data generated by modern mining equipment and processes:

Predictive Maintenance

Unplanned equipment failures are among the most costly and disruptive events in mining. Our predictive maintenance systems use machine learning algorithms to analyse sensor data from thousands of pieces of equipment in real time, identifying patterns that indicate impending failures before they occur. This capability has reduced unplanned downtime by up to 30% at our pilot operations, saving millions of dollars in repair costs and lost production while extending the operational life of critical assets.

Geological Modelling

Traditional geological modelling relies on drill core samples and human interpretation, a process that is inherently limited by the density of sampling points. Anglo American is deploying AI-powered geological modelling tools that integrate drill core data, geophysical surveys, and satellite imagery to create three-dimensional ore body models of unprecedented accuracy. These models enable more precise mine planning, reducing waste extraction and improving ore recovery rates.

Process Optimisation

In our concentrators and processing plants, AI systems continuously optimise process parameters β€” including grind size, reagent dosing, flotation cell performance, and water balance β€” to maximise metal recovery while minimising energy and water consumption. At our Mogalakwena platinum mine, AI-driven process optimisation has improved metal recovery by over 2%, a significant achievement at the scale of our operations.

Autonomous Mining Equipment

Autonomous vehicles and equipment are transforming surface and underground mining operations, delivering improvements in safety, productivity, and consistency:

  • Autonomous haul trucks: At our Kolomela iron ore mine in South Africa, we have deployed a fleet of autonomous haul trucks that operate continuously without human drivers. These vehicles follow optimised routes, maintain consistent speeds, and eliminate the safety risks associated with driver fatigue and human error. The result is a measurable improvement in both safety performance and hauling efficiency.
  • Autonomous drilling systems: Our automated drill rigs can execute complex drilling patterns with sub-centimetre precision, improving blast fragmentation and reducing the energy required for subsequent crushing and grinding.
  • Underground automation: In our underground platinum and diamond mines, we are deploying remotely operated and autonomous load-haul-dump (LHD) vehicles that remove operators from the most hazardous areas of the mine, fundamentally improving safety outcomes.

Integrated Operations Centres

Anglo American's integrated operations centres represent the nerve system of our digital mining ecosystem. These state-of-the-art facilities aggregate real-time data from sensors, equipment, and systems across entire mining complexes, providing operators and engineers with a comprehensive, unified view of operations:

  • Real-time monitoring: Every piece of equipment, every process variable, and every safety parameter is monitored in real time, enabling rapid response to anomalies and continuous optimisation of performance.
  • Remote operation: Many mining tasks that previously required on-site presence can now be managed remotely from our integrated operations centres, reducing travel requirements and enabling specialist expertise to be deployed across multiple sites simultaneously.
  • Data-driven decision-making: Advanced analytics dashboards synthesise complex operational data into actionable insights, empowering managers to make faster, more informed decisions.

Digital Twins and Simulation

Digital twin technology creates virtual replicas of our mining operations that mirror the physical world in real time. These digital models enable engineers to test process changes, evaluate capital investment scenarios, and optimise operational parameters in a risk-free virtual environment before implementing them in the field. At our Quellaveco copper mine in Peru, digital twin simulations were used extensively during the commissioning phase to optimise plant performance and accelerate ramp-up to design capacity.

Cybersecurity and Data Governance

As mining becomes increasingly digital, the importance of robust cybersecurity and data governance cannot be overstated. Anglo American has invested significantly in cybersecurity infrastructure, policies, and training to protect our digital assets, operational technology systems, and sensitive data from cyber threats. Our cybersecurity programme is aligned with international standards, including the NIST Cybersecurity Framework, and is regularly assessed by independent security experts.

The Human Element

While technology is transforming mining, people remain at the centre of everything we do. Anglo American is investing heavily in digital skills development, equipping our workforce with the capabilities they need to thrive in the mine of the future. Our Digital Academy provides training in data analytics, AI, robotics, and digital systems management, ensuring that our people are empowered by technology rather than displaced by it. By combining human expertise with digital innovation, we are building a mining industry that is safer, smarter, and more sustainable than ever before.
